Charles Joseph
Cathcart
December 14, 1927 – March 18, 2021
Charles Joseph Cathcart, former longtime resident of Hinsdale and West Chesterfield, NH, died at his home in Yarmouth, Maine on March 18, 2021 at the age of 93. Charlie was born in Woburn, MA on December 14, 1927. He was born to Charles and Betty Cathcart but his father died when he was very young. His mother remarried Peter Monast and he was raised by them in Reeds Ferry, NH.
Charlie attended McGaw High School in Merrimack, NH and was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. After graduating from UNH in 1949, he served in the Army for two years achieving the rank of sergeant and was stationed in Korea. During his time in the Army he was a member of the Counterintelligence Corps, 2nd CIC Detachment, and he was very proud of his service with that group. He stayed involved with the CIC until it was dissolved a decade ago. Upon returning from the Army he married Nina Tucker in 1954 and they had three children together.
He was employed in Brattleboro, VT for most of his career, first at The Book Press and later at Boise Cascade where he was the transportation director.
Charlie always had a love for sports, especially baseball, which he played in high school. Due to an injury in college he was unable to pursue professional baseball as a career, but he continued to stay active in sports by officiating high school baseball, basketball and soccer games. One of the highlights of his life was being able to attend an umpiring training camp at the site of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. He was so honored to be asked to umpire at the Little League World Series in 1970. His interest in sports continued with skiing which led him to be involved in the National Ski Patrol and that became a lifelong interest of his. He remained active in this organization for years and received his 50-year distinguished membership recognition that he was very proud of.
The greatest source of joy in his life was his family. He was a devoted father and grandfather and genuinely enjoyed being part of all of their activities. He was such a kind, caring, selfless man and he is going to be so missed by all of his family.
Charlie is survived by his three children, Karen (John) Lynch of Jonesboro, AR, Chip (Wendy) Cathcart of Portland, ME and Lynne (Gene) Avery of Bow, NH and his sisters, Dottie (Clayton) Todd and Carol Pelletier all of Amherst, NH. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
A private service will be held for the immediate family with burial to take place in Last Rest Cemetery in Merrimack, NH.
