Obituary

Charles M Nute, 94, of Vero Beach FL died January 11, 2015 at Harbor Chase Assisted Living and Memory Care Facility in Vero Beach, Fl.

He was born in Dover, NH on Aug. 11, 1920 a son of the late Charles M. Sr. and Alice (Patoine) Nute.

Charles was a graduate of the McGaw Normal Institute in Merrimack NH, after graduating he worked for the Bell Telephone Company in Nashua , until enlisting in the US Army on September 21, 1942. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant, Headquarters Company 353rd Infantry Regiment on January 11, 1946, 69 years to the day of his passing. A Battle of the Bulge participant he was truly one of "the Greatest Generation".

After WWII he came back to Merrimack and continued his employment with the Bell Telephone Company from 1946 to 1982.

He resided in Merrimack for 75 years, and had volunteered with many organizations, including the Merrimack Volunteer Fire department, VFW, American Legion Post #98 Merrimack, Town Moderator, Merrimack Building and Planning Committee and served two terms in the New Hampshire State Legislature. He was a 69 year veteran member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Benevolent Lodge No. 7 in Milford NH and attended the Congregational church in Merrimack.

Charlie was a fixture in town and everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him knew he could be counted on to help out and get whatever the job was done. In the summer months, he could be found relaxing at Libby's trailer park in York Beach, ME, or riding his tractor around his property next to the old covered bridge on Turkey Hill Road. Charlie was a closet inventor and he was always solving problems in creative ways.

Charles was one of 10 children raised in what is now Buckley's Restaurant –Riddles Tavern an historic site in the middle of town. The phone book back in 1936 listed the Nutes phone number as 2.

He is pre-deceased by his wife of 64 years Joan "Anna" (Boyce) Nute. Members of his family include his daughter Sandra Meehan and her husband Edward of Vero Beach, FL and Nantucket, Ma, a granddaughter, Faith Bichachi and her husband Joshua with their two daughters Madison and Paige of Orlando, FL and a grandson, Glenn Meehan, his wife Alicia and 2 children Jacob and Charlotte of Woodstock, GA. Surviving siblings include Donald Nute of Merrimack and Barefoot Bay, FL and Connie (Smith) of Tucson AZ , and many nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service will take place this summer in the Last Rest Cemetery, Merrimack.
