Dimitri “Jim” James Zakos, 79, of Merrimack, New Hampshire, passed away on April 22, 2026, at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, NH.

Jim was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on May 30, 1946, to the late Zachary Zakos and Margaret (Spraker) Walsh. He was raised in Lowell and was a member of Lowell High School, Class of 1964. He later earned his Bachelor’s degree from Keene State College.

Jim, as most knew him, had strong convictions about just about everything. He had an opinion on nearly any topic—sports, news, movies, and politics—and more often than not, he believed he was right. Along with that came a great sense of humor. He had a deep love for comedy, especially the classics, from the Marx Brothers to John Candy and Rodney Dangerfield. He had a great fondness for his football days at Lowell High School, where he played alongside lifelong friend Bruce Brown under former Green Bay Packer Ray Riddick.

Jim proudly served in the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, where he taught heavy machinery and generators. He later taught electricity and electronics at Nashua High School. Over the years, Jim worked many jobs, but was especially proud of becoming an accomplished barber, owning multiple barbershops in Westford and Littleton, Massachusetts, and running his own shop during the final years of his career. He also spent time teaching guitar. He was an avid boxing fan, having fought in the Golden Gloves and later promoting boxing in Lowell, Massachusetts. Jim also competed in bodybuilding, placing in Mr. New Hampshire in the late 1970s.

Music was a constant in his life. He loved playing the guitar and had a passion for jazz, especially the old standards, performing locally many times over the years. His love for New England sports was unmatched, especially the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Jean (Daly) Zakos, and his son, Alexander Zakos, who were his world. He is also survived by his siblings, Byron Zakos, Pamela Signorelli, and Patricia Roybal, along with several nieces and nephews, and his uncle, Greg Zahos of Greece.

In accordance with his wishes, services will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America at alzfdn.org.

He will be deeply missed
