Evelyn C. (Engbarth) Barrett, 98 of Merrimack, NH, passed away on Sunday, October 18th, 2026 at Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont, NH.
Born in Ocean Springs, MS on February 6th, 1928, she was one of two children to the late Charles and Irene (Hopkins) Engbarth. Evelyn grew up in Ocean Springs where her father had built their family home and worked as a master plumber. After graduating from Ocean Springs High School, she attended college at Perkinston State College in Perkinston, MS and Southern Mississippi College in Hattiesburg and then achieved a master’s degree in Business Administration from Louisiana State University in 1950.
Evelyn married Arthur James Barrett, Jr. in 1951 and they moved several time before settling in Nashua, NH where he worked as an electrical engineer. They eventually established a long-term home in Merrimack in 1956.
Evelyn taught business classes at the High School in Milford, NH for one year before starting her 32-year teaching career at Merrimack High School. She taught classes in business, accounting, typing, and shorthand; and also served as the head of the business department before retiring in 1990.
Evelyn’s many interests included traveling, gardening, and sewing. She was also involved in several organizations including the Girl Scouts, the Merrimack Senior Center, the Merrimack Crimeline, and the Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Sorority. She also enjoyed family outings, going to her children's ball games, and enrolling them in camp programs.
Along with her parents, Evelyn was pre-deceased by her husband, Arthur Barrett in 2010 and her older brother, Charles Lester Engbarth. She will be forever loved and remembered by her four children, George Barrett, Ruth Barrett, James Barrett, and Carolyn (Barrett) Alter, along with Ruth’s husband Bill Silberman and Carolyn’s husband Bruce Alter.
Evelyn’s family was very appreciative of the care that she received from Maryann Campbell and her daughters (Anne, Elaine, and Sharon) while she was in residence at the Campbell House Assisted Living Community in Charlestown, NH.
