Obituary

James “Jim” Richard Carey, 85, of Bedford NH passed away on Saturday May 16th, 2026 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack after a period of declining health.

He was born in Rome NY on April 13th, 1941, the first son of Alfred G. and Harriet (Allen) Carey. He attended local schools, went to college at Rochester Institute of Technology and graduated in 1963 with an accounting degree. He received his CPA certificate in 1968 and worked in the public and private sectors of Rochester business until 1983 when he relocated to Penn Yan, NY.

Jim had an entrepreneurial spirit and founded or co-founded several businesses including a first of its kind recycling business in the early 1970s and Nautical But Nice, a retail store selling goods based on his passion for boating, both in Rochester. Jim later opened, along with his wife Doris, a CPA office in Penn Yan, NY and became very active in his adopted hometown. He was a founding member of the Keuka Business Park Board and a member and chairman of the Yates County IDA. In 1986 he was a founding board member of the Yates Country Cooperative – the Windmill. He was a founding member of the Yates Community Center. Jim was also a member of the Yates County Chamber of Commerce Board and the S&S Foundation Board. A 25-year member of the Penn Yan Lions Club he also served as treasurer and president.

Jim was always very active and enjoyed hiking, skiing, and fishing, especially when those activities were enjoyed with family and friends. He was also an accomplished woodturner. Many of his bowls and turnings were donated to a variety of organizations for their silent auctions. His main passion however was golf. At Lakeside County Club he was treasurer and president and greatly enjoyed competitive matches.

Along with his parents, he is pre-deceased by two brothers, Donald and Alfred Carey. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Doris (Henault) Carey: two sons Sean Carey and his wife Lesley, and Michael Carey; stepdaughters Karen (John) Diggins, Tracey (Bob) Papas; and stepsons Scott and Peter (Laurel) Peloquin: three grandchildren – Christie, Josie and Caleb; ten step-grandchildren Nicole, Katie, Patrick, Jessica, Jeremy, Peter, Breanne, Shelby, Sarah, and Megan; 9 great grandchildren; a sister, Janet Olandese along with several nieces and nephews.

Memorial visitation will be held at the Rivet Funeral Home, 425 Daniel Webster Highway, Merrimack on Sunday, June 21st, 2026 from 12 to 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to: The Oriskany Alumni Association P.O. Box 906; Oriskany, New York 13424.
