Jean S.
Piper
June 3, 1934 – September 4, 2025
Jean S. Piper, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, MA peacefully passed away on September 4, 2025, surrounded by family. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles A. Piper Sr. (Chuck) to whom she was married for 68 years. She was born on June 3,1934, in Madison, ME, the daughter of the late Alfred L. (Johnny) and Marie Antoinette Solange (Hoxie) Saultes. She was predeceased by her sister, Ellen Florence, who died at 14 months.
After high school graduation Jean worked for Madison Electric until Oct 17, 1955, just two days after Chuck and Jean were married. Shortly afterwards, they moved to California while Chuck served in the USAF until they finally settled in Chelmsford MA, 1960. Jean selflessly devoted her time to her family, raising four children, Charles, Jeff, Greg, and Lisa. Jean was a devoted mother, loving wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother. When the kids were in middle school and older, Jean worked in accounts payable for Field Machinery and then became an employee of the Town of Chelmsford, serving as an administrative assistant in the Chelmsford School Food Administration.
Her legacy is her family, including ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren as well as being a founding member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Chelmsford MA. She served in many capacities at Aldersgate including Trustees, Hospitality, Outreach, Education, and more. If she wasn't at Aldersgate or home, you would often see Jean with Chuck at all of the kids' sporting events.
Jean's heart was always in Maine. Their love for Pleasant Pond in Caratunk began in the 1950's and continued throughout their life together. They spent every free moment they could with their children and extended family at the pond when they were not at their home in Florida. This extraordinary, peaceful and treasured water-front home (camp) brought many together and created a lifetime of memories. She would take the grandchildren to pick blueberries and raspberries and then whip up the finest of muffins, pancakes and pies. Our evening meals where we all gathered were second to none. From boiled dinners, to baked beans, lobster and clam bakes, her attention to detail with slight alterations in her recipes made for the finest of meals! If she wasn't preparing meals, she was on the sewing machine and was an expert seamstress, a tradition on her mother's side going back to the textile mills of Lowell, MA.
Jean is survived by her identical twin, Joan S. Cross (and late husband Robert Cross II) of Skowhegan, ME and her brother William Saultes and his wife Frances of Madison, ME. Additionally, Jean is survived by her four children, Charles Jr. and his wife Teresa (Leaverton) of Searsmont, ME, Jeffrey and his partner Eman Rootovich of Nashua, NH, Gregory and his wife Lynn (Bungard) of Chelmsford, MA, and Lisa and her husband Jeff Sanborn of Chelmsford, MA. She was the grandmother of ten including Lindsey (and spouse Finn Wilder-Piper), Kathryn (and spouse Hussam Al-Rawi), Daniel (and spouse Gretchen Heilman Piper), Alyssa (and spouse Zach Watson), Kimberly (and spouse Derek Coffey), Matthew, Jeffrey, Micaela (and spouse Connor Brimley), Caitlin and Jonathan. She was also the great grandmother of ten, including Ruby, Colette, Yukon, Maeve, Bliss, Wolfgang, Hammoudi, Thurayya, Resha, and Everly.
Jean lived a rich and rewarding life and more than earned her wings! A memorial service will be held at Christ Community Fellowship on 43 Maple St., Madison ME on Saturday October 18, 2025, 11:00am (live stream) followed by internment of both Chuck and Jean at Forest Hill Cemetery and a 1pm reception back at Christ Community Fellowship. This is the very location Jean and Chuck were married 70 years ago October 15th, 1955.
The family respectfully asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Jean's name to Aldersgate United Methodist Church Memorial Fund 242 Boston Rd., Chelmsford, MA 01824 or The Pleasant Pond Protective Association, P.O. Box 36, Caratunk, ME 04925.
Finally, a very special thanks to Beacon Hospice Care, truly, angels among us!
