Obituary

Joseph Martel, 87, of Merrimack, NH passed away on October 7, 2024. Born on October 18, 1936, in Manchester, NH to the late Donat and Estelle Martel.

A proud veteran, Joseph enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1959, serving until 1963. He was a well-known local business owner, operating Reeds Ferry Motors and J&J Carpet Cleaning and Painting. His entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to service made a lasting impact on the community.

Joseph dedicated over 50 years to the Merrimack community he cherished. He was an active member of the American Legion, Post 98, and also contributed significantly to Merrimack's Parks and Recreation Department. An avid softball player, he played a vital role in the construction of Martel Field, leaving a legacy of community engagement and athleticism.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Helen Marie Martel (née Degnan); his daughter, Sandy Van Sciver and her husband, Jay Van Sciver; his son, Joey Martel; his granddaughter, Stefanie Martel; his sister, Michele Bonfiglio; his brother, Paul Martel; and his nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Joseph is predeceased by his sister Lorraine Vachon and his brother Maurice Martel, as well as his sisters-in-law Agnes Martel and Mary Martel, and his brother-in-law Nick Bonfiglio.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no formal services held at this time. The family invites all who knew Joseph to remember his kindness and dedication to community and family.
