Obituary

Marjorie D. Howell of Bedford, NH, died on February 26, 2021 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH. Marjorie was born in Lansing, Michigan to Merle and Dorothy McElmurry. In addition to Michigan, Marjorie lived in California, Florida, Alabama, Minnesota, Mississippi, New York, Texas and New Hampshire.

She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie (and David) Lyons of Merrimack, NH; four grandchildren: Joshua Lyons, Alma Howell Lyons, Martin (and Lauren) Lyons, and Natalie Lyons; four brothers: Ron McElmurry of Lake Mary, FL; Jim McElmurry of Franklin, NC; Russ (and Laurie) McElmurry of Flowery Branch, GA; John (and Magaly) McElmurry of Altamonte Springs, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

The following tribute was written by Stephanie:

Mom, you taught me about independence. When I was young, you played the ukulele and sang folk songs to me. You learned to fly a plane, and flew our family of three from New York to the Bahamas. You divorced in 1977. You took me to church. You were a girl scout leader. You taught me how to make a mix tape of songs from the radio. You bought a first generation Sony Walkman. You had a CB radio in your Honda Accord, and your handle was Blue Angel. We enjoyed numerous road trips. You taught me how to drive a stick shift in the mall parking lot on a Sunday afternoon. You took me to Chili's often. We shopped and dined well in Dallas. We went to see so many movies, especially at the dollar show. We went to a few Barry Manilow concerts. We went to concerts on the lawn at EDS in the summer. You cared for laboring moms delivering babies for 30+ years. You allowed me enough freedom so I could learn from my mistakes. You survived my teenage and college years. All my friends loved you. When I moved to NH and engaged soon after, you didn't panic. You quickly loved David too. You participated in a bicycle road race, with some road rash to prove it. You submitted a photo in a photography contest (and placed 2nd if I recall correctly). You were surfing the internet and sending emails before me. You taught yourself how to build computers. You always had the latest gadgets. Your first grandchild named you Mana, and that name grew to suit you. You helped me to be a better mom. You moved from Texas to NH when you were 53, with your red convertible. You were our first medical consult for every ailment. You sat beside me at baseball, soccer, volleyball and basketball games, concerts, plays, robotic competitions, and graduations. You traded stocks. You were a landlord. You left familiar hospital work for remote call center nursing work. You explored every corner of New England with family and friends. You enjoyed not having to work when you retired. You were a Red Sox fan. We faithfully attended church together, and we stopped attending together too. You read a lot of books. You researched our genealogy, discovering exciting hidden details in our ancestry. You loved a little chihuahua named Javier. You bravely endured every cancer obstacle that arose. You dearly loved your family, and especially me. Mom, I love you so very much, and I carry your independent spirit in my heart.

A private family service will take place at a later date.
