Obituary

Mary Catherine Blackwood (Mohan), Cathy, 78, passed peacefully surrounded by family on June 24, 2021 at the Courville in Nashua. She is survived by her husband, Dr. W. Stewart Blackwood of Nashua, sons Andrew Blackwood and his fiancée Maja of Los Angeles and Malcolm Blackwood and his wife Jennifer of Bedford and by daughter Rachel and her husband David Mowbray of Goffstown. Also survived by her two grandchildren, Jonas Blackwood, 13, and Korben Mowbray, 7, who provided her great joy and pride, particularly in her final days. Also, by her sister Anne Drury and two nieces, Lucy Drury and Gemma Stankiewicz and her husband Matthew and daughter Tess, all of England.

Cathy was born in Monaghan, Ireland to Patrick and Mary Anne Moan (McGrory) on August 16, 1942. As was common at the time, she left school at a young age and worked various jobs in Ireland before moving to England where she proudly completed her nursing degree.  There, she met her husband-to-be while working as a nurse at the same hospital in London. The couple married in May 1972 after a two-week engagement and just recently entered their 50 th year of marriage. Andrew and Malcolm were born in England.

The family of four emigrated to the United States in 1978 with a single crate of belongings, settling in Nashua from day one, a city they never left. A few years later, Rachel was born in Nashua. Cathy completed her education with a degree in Psychology from Rivier College. While she did work as a school nurse and various other endeavors, Cathy lived for her family and was the Matriarch of the Blackwood clan, guiding and nurturing her children. She was proud to become an American Citizen.

Cathy loved music and singing, also playing some violin and piano. She took great joy in recording music with daughter Rachel in the group she named "The Irish Roses" and took comfort in her final hours being able to hear that Irish music. In her younger years she was an avid tennis player having won a rated level doubles national title in San Diego and took great pleasure in playing mixed doubles with her husband and Malcolm. A trophy for Cathy and Malcolm's mixed doubles tournament remained on display in her bedroom through the day of her passing. She loved and always remembered her drive across America to Los Angeles with Andrew and they continued to share their passion for writing together. She also had a great love for and a garden full of roses

In her later years she doted on her grandchildren, she had the joy and privilege of getting to spend a lot of time with Korben and Jonas, sharing a special bond with both and who she treasured and fiercely protected.

Cathy embraced her Christian faith and was a devout Catholic and able to receive Last Rites before she passed. Her faith was a source of comfort and strength for her, and we know that she has passed through St. Peter's gates which does provide her family great comfort. Her family offers thanks to all the staff of St. Joseph Hospital and Courville Nursing Home in Nashua for their excellent care, kindness, and compassion.

Cathy walked through her life journey hand in hand with her beloved husband Stewart. She was always there for him, and he was always there for her and was there to hold her hand in the final moments just as he always had for almost half century.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Parish of the Resurrection Church, 449 Broad Street, Nashua on Thursday, July 1st at 11 AM. Everyone is asked to please meet at the church. Internment will follow in St Louis De Gonzagues Cemetery, Nashua.
