Obituary

Our Dad, Richard "Dick" Nantel, 76 of Merrimack, NH died Sunday Jan. 9, 2022 at his home after a long illness. He was born in Oakland, CA on Sept. 13, 1945, the son of the late Maurice E. and Edith L. (Shampnois) Nantel.

Dad was a longtime resident of Merrimack. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1964-1967 and his community as a Police Officer, starting his law enforcement career in 1973 as part of the Milford NH police department. He also served the communities of Merrimack and Hudson NH and his years in law enforcement were the highlight of his career life. Dad was a mentor to so many officers and remained a strong brother to the men and woman in blue until his death.

Members of his family include his wife of nearly 30 years, Peggy Kelly of Merrimack; his son Rick Nantel and his wife Annmarie of New Ipswich, NH; his daughter Kelly Nantel and her partner Tracy Murrell of Nashville, TN; and his stepson Ricky Follansbee of Virginia. He's also survived by his five grandchildren, Scott Werner, Megan, Tyler, Trevor, and Mallorie Nantel, two great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Salem, and his in-laws, Jim and Irene Caillouette and Tammy Davoli. In addition to his parents, Dad is pre-deceased by our stepbrother, Shawn Follansbee who died in 2009.

Dad loved making memories with family and friends around the campfire out at his camp in Swanzey NH. And he was a life-long Boston sports fan. Watching games with Dad was always entertaining; he could be counted on for some real colorful language that underscored his passion for his teams. He was also an avid golfer and loved to spend time on the course (as well as the 19th hole) with his friends from the Souhegan Woods Golf Association.

Our Dad was a one-of-a-kind guy. He was loving, funny, loyal and as stubborn as they come. But he loved life and his passion for it shined brightly for all who knew him to see. Dad never met a stranger and made everyone who he engaged with feel like an old friend. He was a great cook and a connoisseur of mediocre wine. We will miss his laughter, his energy, and his food! But mostly we will miss his presence in our lives.

We're holding casual memorial calling hours on Saturday Jan. 15, in the Rivet Funeral Home & Crematorium, 425 Daniel Webster Hwy, Merrimack, NH from 1-4 PM followed by a sports-oriented celebration of Dad's life at the VFW Post 8641, 282 Daniel Webster Highway in Merrimack at 4:30 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Home Health & Hospice, 7 Executive Park Dr, Merrimack, NH 03054 in Dad's honor.
