Obituary

George A. Nelson, 83, of Hudson, NH and formerly of Chelmsford, MA passed away peacefully on Tuesday January 26, 2016 after a short illness.

He was born in Middleton, MA on May 30, 1932, graduated in 1950 form Lynn English High School, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952. He served in Korea in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1956. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, MA.

Mr. Nelson was employed by IBM in Kingston, NY where, in 1960, he met and married Susan F. Cherveny, also an IBM employee. While with IBM, George worked on the first large scale computer based air defense system for the U.S. Air Force at Lincoln Lab in Bedford, MA and the NASA Apollo Moon Program in Huntsville, AL. He also worked for the Mitre Corporation in Bedford, MA for 18 years on many computer based systems for the U.S. Air Force.

George and Sue raised three children in Chelmsford, MA where they resided for 47 years. While in Chelmsford, George volunteered for a number of community programs. He served as President of the Fitts Little League in the 1970's, as a member of the Chelmsford Finance Committee in the 1980's, and as a member of the Friends of the Chelmsford Senior Center Board of Directors in the 1990's. Most recently, he served as Secretary for the Mission Pointe Condominium Association.

He enjoyed many outdoor activities including skiing, mountain climbing, hiking, softball, and building almost anything. After retiring in 1992, George and Sue travelled the country in a motor home for 10 year visiting many iconic American sites and events.

He is survived by Susan, his wife of 55 years; three children, Jeffrey Nelson of Addison, VT, Robin Nelson of Minnetonka, MN, and David Nelson and his wife Alicia of Merrimack, NH. Also, two wonderful and loving grand-daughters, Shaelagh Nelson and Rhiana Etherington-Nelson of Merrimack.

Per George's request, there will be no calling hours. A private Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the NH Veteran's Cemetery in Boscawen at a later date.
